![]() While the place known as Phoenix is fairly new, the history of its first Indigenous peoples goes back thousands of years. Today the Akimel O’odham live on two nearby reservation communities known as the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community(Onk Akimel O’odham) and the Gila River Indian Community(Keli Akimel O’odham), with nearby relatives the Tohono O’odham Nation in southern AZ. The City of Phx (Ski:kigk) sits on the ancestral homelands of the Akimel O’odham(River People) and their ancestors the Huhugam/Hohokam. We’d discussed collaborating for many years but never had the opportunity to work on a proper mural project together until this one We both grew up in Phoenix, and have known each other since the 90s.
